What is the difference between HS, CN and TARIC for EU imports?

TradeClear · Editorial & source check ·

The short answer

HS is the international six-digit foundation. The EU Combined Nomenclature extends classification to eight digits, while TARIC adds subdivisions and applicable measures. A six-digit candidate alone does not complete an EU tariff check.

What to do next

  1. Match the actual product to the current EU nomenclature.
  2. Check origin, import date and relevant measure conditions.
  3. For disputed classification, seek professional advice and consider the official Binding Tariff Information process where applicable.
